There have been a few acoustic guitar changes. Registry of Guitar Tutors (R.G.T) have now merged with London College of Music. (LCM) this has been rebranded ‘RGT@LCM’ The RGT syllabus for acoustic guitar ended at the end of 2020. RGT@LCM. In this post I will only be concentrating on acoustic guitar performance awards as this has always been popular with my students over the years. As most of you may know London College of Music offer graded examinations on most instruments. I will also include links within this post that I urge you to take a look at that may help

Registry Of Guitar Tutors Acoustic Performance Exams

To my knowledge RGT was the first exam board to allow students to do video assessments. For a performance certificate depending on the level the student played. Normally the student would record all of the pieces in one take. This would then be uploaded to RGT and and a few weeks later we received the results and certificate. The following was required for each step /level.

Steps 1 & 2

One Rhythm Study and Two Melodies.

Levels

1 & 2, One Rhythm Study, One Fingerstyle Study and One Melody.

3 ,4, & 5 One Rhythm Study, Two Pieces

6, 7, & 8, Four Pieces

RGT@LCM Acoustic Performance Exams

There are new workbooks for ‘RGT@LCM’ Do not throw out your old RGT books yet as you can play one of the pieces from the old syllabus if you want to as long as it is from the relevant level. The requirements of the exam is the same as before. However unlike Trinity College Rock & Pop exams. You do not have to do all the whole exam in one take. You can now record each part of it separately.

Each part should be filmed without any edits. When recording the required material please take into consideration your opportunity to record multiple attempts, and then submit your best take. Your performance standard needs to be slightly higher than for the equivalent grade / level.

There are other methods of taking this exam due to the restrictions on face-to-face exams as a result of COVID-19, and candidates can now take their exam online at any time in the comfort of their own home. The exam will be conducted in real-time following the same format, standards and regulations as a face-to-face exam. Should you wish to choose this option. How To Video Your Guitar Exam

Now you know the requirements. You will need to record yourself playing. I have covered this subject on a previous post for Trinity College Rock & Pop you can view that by Clicking Here However for the acoustic guitar exams although the process of recording will be the same. There are a few differences in the guidelines.

You will need to say your name to the camera, and the exam that you are taking For example: “Hello, I am Anthony Green, Level 4 Acoustic Guitar Exam. A Cornish Tune by Will McNicol”. You will be required to do this for each part of the exam, if you are recording each part as a separate take. A static camera must be used and you need to be seen clearly playing the instrument on the recording. Take some time out to do a quick trial video to make sure the video and audio sound is clear.

A smartphone or tablet which is sufficiently suitable for recording quality. Set your video camera resolution to 720p and not HD. Your uploaded files must be either avi, flv, wmv, mov or mp4 format. The maximum file size is 750MB. Please label the files with YOUR name and the name of the piece or component.
